About the Young'uns Book
A POETIC TRIBUTE TO THE YOUNG’UNS WHO LUNCHED WITH OPRAH is also a cultural tour. It is a rhythmic exploration of some of the most enriching young women of our time. This book is a continuation of the poetry series that began with “A Poetic Tribute to the Legends Who Lunched with Oprah.”
At her 2005 luncheon, Oprah designated 25 of her invited guests as Legends - women who have been “a Bridge to Now” for her. Oprah categorized the remaining women (including herself) as Young’uns – women who have benefited from the work of the Legends. The list of Young’uns included women such as Michelle Obama, Janet Jackson, Alicia Keys, Kathleen Battle, Suzanne de Passe, Gayle King, Phylicia Rashad, Debbie Allen, Terry McMillan, Pam Grier, and Mariah Carey.
We have honored 20 of these young women with poems that reflect their personal contributions. The concept of each individual poem is uniquely based on the woman’s life. In some cases the poem is a reflection of specific accomplishments and dates. In other cases the authors honor a single contribution. For example, Susan Taylor’s poem “In the Garden” honors the spiritual awareness that she has shared with us throughout the years. For Mariah Carey, they honor the many songs that she has given us. And for Audra McDonald, it is the awards that she has won. The intent is to highlight their lives so that the reader too develops an appreciation, awareness, and a curiosity that will compel each to learn more.
This was not intended to simply be a book of poetry. The intent was to honor their history by uniquely presenting it in poetic verse. We have offered just enough knowledge; just enough insight; just enough facts to peak your interest. This is an intriguing group of women that all can learn from.
